Core vaccines are recommended for all dogs. They include pet vaccinations for canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis, and rabies. The canine parvovirus vaccine is generally administered annually. Your veterinarian at Van Loon Animal Hospital will know if your dog should be vaccinated for distemper, hepatitis, and rabies every year or every three years.

What are Non-Core Vaccines for Dogs?

Our doctors recommend non-core vaccines for dogs based on lifestyle. It may benefit your dog to have an annual vaccine for Bordetella bronchiseptica (kennel cough) if your pet spends time at the groomer or is around other dogs in the dog park or a boarding kennel. If your dog is exposed to ticks and is at risk for Lyme Disease, your veterinarian may recommend an annual Borrelia burgdorferi vaccine.

When do Pet Vaccinations Begin?

By the time your puppy is six or eight weeks old, your veterinarian will administer the first round of pet vaccines at a wellness visit. Every three of four weeks after that you should return to the office for another round of shots. The initial round of pet vaccinations will be complete by the time your puppy is sixteen weeks old. After that, your dog should be seen annually for a wellness visit and any necessary shots.
