Which Vaccinations To My Pets Need?

As pet owners, the health of your pet is something you take very seriously. You make sure they get the correct nutrition and plenty of water. These are all part of responsible pet parenting. Getting regularly scheduled wellness exams is very important. Your veterinarian includes vaccinations as part of your pet’s wellness exam. The necessary pet vaccinations depend on the type of pet you have. Cats and dogs have different requirements. At Van Loon Animal Hospital in Holmen WI, we have years of experience treating all types of pets.

Pet vaccinations come in two varieties, core vaccines are recommended for all pets and non-core vaccines which are optional and will be suggested depending on your pet’s lifestyle. The only mandated vaccine in the state of Wisconsin is rabies for dogs. The state regulation is every three years, but some localities require a yearly vaccine so be sure to ask what is required in your location.

Dogs

Core vaccinations

Beyond rabies, the core vaccines for dogs are usually given together. Often referred to as the “distemper shot” (DHPP) it includes distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza.

Non-core vaccinations

The non-core vaccinations are for Bordetella, Lyme disease, Leptospira and canine influenza. These are optional and depending on where you live and the things your dog is exposed to may not be necessary.

Cats

Core vaccinations

Core vaccinations for cats are also usually given a combination shot (FVRCP). It is also referred to as the “distemper shot” and protects against feline distemper, viral rhinotracheitis and calicivirus. Rabies is not required by law but it is also recommended. A FVRCP-C vaccine includes the chlamydia vaccine.

Non-core vaccinations

For most indoor cats who do not go to a kennel or boarding, non-core vaccines are not necessary. For outdoor cats, your vet may recommend vaccination for feline infectious peritonitis, Bordetella, feline immunodeficiency and feline leukemia.
