Vaccines are preventive care treatments for pets that help their bodies build immunities to certain diseases. At Van Loon Animal Hospital in Holmen, we strive to help you maintain up-to-date vaccinations for your pets so that they are protected at all times.

What Vaccinations Are Essential?

Vaccinations are split up into two categories, core and non-core vaccines. Our veterinary team will determine which vaccines your pet will get. One vaccine that all pets must have is the rabies shot. In most states, the rabies shot is required by law.

Core vaccinations for dogs include adenovirus (canine hepatitis), distemper, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. A potential core preventative treatment for dogs is the leptospirosis shot.

The core shots for cats other than rabies are the feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus type 1 (rhinotracheitis), and panleukopenia (feline distemper.)

Other Times Vaccines Can Be Recommended

Some situations can require additional vaccinations. For example, we may recommend a Bordetella shot to prevent canine infectious tracheobronchitis or kennel cough, if you are or will be boarding your cat or dog in a kennel. The infection can spread through the air and with direct contact between animals. It can also be possible to get it at busy dog parks, daycares, and training groups. Dogs in rural areas and ones that spend much of their time outside should get a Lyme disease shot.
