We have an exceptional staff of talented doctors and support technicians with particular interests in all aspects of animal care.
Our family-oriented staff is committed to providing you with state-of-the-art veterinary care while maintaining an atmosphere of respect, support, and continued education. We offer a complete range of veterinary services including routine vaccinations, major and minor surgeries, and dental procedures. We have an on-call veterinarian at all times that is available to see during emergencies. We also have hospitalization, critical care, grooming, and boarding services as well.

Meet Our Team
Mark Hein, DVM
University of Madison School of Veterinary Medicine Charter Class 1987
Dr. Mark Hein is a graduate of the “Charter Class” of University-Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and works closely with this group on referrals in chemotherapy, orthopedics and ophthalmology. He was the first veterinarian to offer laser surgery to pet owners in the La Crosse area as an alternative to more painful conventional surgeries. Dr. Hein also founded the Onalaska-based PETCO walk-in clinics in 1995, where clients may see a veterinarian during evening hours without an appointment. He enjoys orthopedics, archery and organic farming.
A native of Ettrick, Wisconsin, Dr. Hein is proud of his 4 children and his pets, Max the African Grey Parrot, his cats Lucifer & Pumpkin, and three horses, Rogue, Sunny and Cisco. Dr. Hein married classmate Anne-Marie Karwoski in 1990, and they now reside in Trempealeau. Together they farm 10 farms in Trempealeau and LaCrosse County.
Sarah is our Practice Manager and has been with our hospital since 2009. She has two Labrador Retrievers, Buddy & Moose, one Bengal cat named Brasco, a red devil cichlid fish, Hector, an African Gray Parrot named George and a Hedgehog, Capone. In her free time she enjoys catfishing, gardening and being outdoors.
Lead Certified Veterinary Technician
Heidi is a Certified Veterinary Technician who moved here from Washington State in 2012 with her husband. She has been a certified technician since 2006. Since moving to Wisconsin, Heidi has been a die-hard Packer fan. She has never missed watching a game and has been to one game at Lambeau Field, with hopes of attending many more. She has two dogs, Buddy and Burt, and two cats, Toby and Praline.
Certified Veterinary Technician
Emily started at Van Loon Animal Hospital in early Spring of 2015. She earned her Certified Veterinary Technician degree after graduating from Globe University with high honors. Emily grew up on a small hobby farm with 600 rabbits, 4 horses and numerous other farm animals. She is also a die-hard Packer fan who does not miss watching a game. When Emily is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family, friends and dog Phyll, cats Fireball, & Smokey.
Lizzie recently graduated from Globe University with an Associates in Veterinary Technology. She is waiting to take her certification exam this fall. She grew up in the Melrose area and graduated from Melrose-Mindoro High School. Lizzie has three dogs,Penelope a Miniature Dachshund, Buddy and Ellie; both Golden Retrievers. During her free time she enjoys music festivals, water sports and going to the gym.
Christine joined our team in early 2016. She attended Globe University for her Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology, and is waiting to take her certification exam this fall! Christine enjoys spending time volunteering at The Eagle Center in Minnesota. Christine has 3 cats, Spaz, Hannibal and Isis.
Chris has been grooming at our facility since 2001. Prior to grooming she worked with us as a doctor assistant. She grew up in Holmen and comes all the way from Rushford to join us. Chris enjoys grooming her own pets when she is not attending to her three beautiful children.
